When you think of Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, you probably think about her signature blowout: full, polished but not too perfect waves with lots of royal-worthy shine. Since her earliest days as part of the royal family, the Princess’s hair has been a particular point of fascination with royal watchers, but her latest look is a major departure from her go-to updos and loose curls.

Middleton made a surprise appearance (of sorts) at Eurovision with a cameo video playing the winning song from the 2022 competition, “Stefania” by Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra. The video begins with a wide shot of a palace and zooms in to a familiar figure at the grand piano: the Princess of Wales! She’s seated at the glossy black piano in a one-shoulder aquamarine blue gown and equally glamorous Old Hollywood waves

Her piano skills are a surprise for sure, but so is her hairstyle! The curls are much more defined and precise than the Princess’s usual looks; they’re parted deeply to one side for a red carpet-worthy elegance reminiscent of the iconic looks of stars like Veronica Lake and sculpted into absolutely pristine, undulating waves down her shoulder, bouncing gently as she plays along with Kalush Orchestra. Middleton usually prefers a more tousled approach to her curly styles, but these more formal waves feel fresh on the future queen of England.
