As far as I am concerned Saweetie is the modern-day queen of the Y2K aesthetic — argue with your momma if you disagree. To be clear, I’m not claiming that she is a pioneer of the Y2K aesthetic or its resurgence, but the Bay Area-raised rapper was looking to the ‘00s and ’90s for style and beauty inspiration long before nostalgia took hold of the masses. Her latest look, for example, was the perfect ode to the Y2K era because her long, wavy hair was adorned with tons of colorful 3D butterflies.

The insects were a popular design motif used in clothing, nail art, and tattoos in the early aughts. Saweetie debuted her butterfly hair with a coordinating sequined jumpsuit to headline Chicago’s Pride in the Park even on June 24 but did not share the look on Instagram until June 26. Butterflies in an array of shades adorned the length of her wavy hair, which cascaded toward her hips. Some butterflies were monochromatic with blue and purple hues. Others came in various color combinations, including pink and purple, blue and lavender, and yellow and pink. You can see all the bright hues of these insects best on the last two slides of her carousel shown below.

The last slide of her post was a video clip showing a close-up of the hairstyle. Her layered waves were swept over the side of her head without a part. Her baby hairs were swooped and looped around the perimeter of her hairline where you can also see flecks of glitter. The shimmer didn’t end there, either, as shiny hair tinsel in an assortment of shades was weaved into her waves.

This hairstyle might have been expectedly dramatic, but her manicure was uncharacteristically short and sweet. Saweetie’s go-to nail artist, Temeka Jackson, painted and sculpted her short tips into a square shape before adorning each with a 3D charm. Jackson combined two looks into one with colorful C-curve French tips on every nail except for the index fingers, which had a rainbow-swirled design. The sixth slide shows a close-up of her manicure where you can see the floral, mushroom, and Playboy bunny charms.
