Nicole Kidman may be country music royalty, what with her decade-plus of marriage to fellow Aussie Keith Urban, but she brought the rock ‘n roll ’70s glam to the Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11.

Kidman walked the red carpet looking like she stepped out of Daisy Jones and the Six with her long strawberry blonde hair worn parted gently to one side and blown out straight for a total ’70s singer-songwriter throwback — Joni Mitchell, is that you? The styling was soft and minimal with just a few bends for movement and subtle texture. Kidman tucked sections behind her ears for an easygoing vibe and mimicked the same carefree feel with her makeup, sticking to a monochromatic palette of baby pink and peach hues on her cheeks, eyes and lips.

Stylist Kylee Heath said she and Kidman wanted the hair to be “bold and straight” for the event and took a cue from Kidman’s Chanel suit for inspiration. First, Heath applied a leave-in conditioner to Kidman’s damp hair and parted it slightly to the side before blowdrying, leaving the ends soft. For the slightly undone texture, Heath used Vegamour’s GRO Dry Shampoo, spraying it through the ends of Kidman’s hair for body.

Kidman paired her long and loose folk rock style with a flared rust tweed Chanel suit, skipping a top and wearing just the jacket to add to the rock ‘n roll allure of her red carpet moment. We know Kidman can sing with the best of them (just watch Moulin Rouge! for proof), so it wouldn’t be a total shock if she had climbed onstage to channel her inner Carly Simon or Stevie Nicks, or if she’d hopped off the tour bus to attend an awards show.

The actor has been feeling the “undone-yet-done” hair looks as of late; at the 2023 Oscars, she ditched the polished updos and precise curls in favor of a beachy, slightly messy bombshell style that added rock-chick cool to her ornate embellished Giorgio Armani Privé gown. The star wore a similar hairstyle to the 2023 Met Gala alongside the pink feathered Chanel gown she originally wore in a commercial in 2004, letting her hair down to temper the opulence of the archival gown. Kidman is a red carpet pro, but that doesn’t mean she plays it safe — she’s always down to mix things up so her formal looks feel fun and fresh, not fussy.
