If an eyeliner trend gets the blessing of Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, then you know it’s a good one — and the beloved 2000s waterliner look just got her extremely coveted seal of approval.

Royal watchers have gotten fed as of late thanks to the Invictus Games, the sporting event created by Prince Harry to honor and celebrate wounded servicemen and women. Markle was in attendance for the 2023 event in Dusseldorf, Germany, and her look on September 15 included one very distinct eyeliner application method. She often keeps her makeup simple and neutral, sticking to rich chocolate, neutral rose and warm earth tones across her eyes, cheeks and lips, and she stuck to those hues for the day of events. Markle’s lids were dusted with a shimmery dark bronze eye shadow, but she amped up the drama with bold strokes of liner on both her upper and lower lashlines, including her waterline — even the inner corners — for more depth and definition. It’s reminiscent of the liner my friends and I tested out in our high school locker room, inspired by Avril Lavigne’s look circa 2002, though Markle’s version is more chic than our teen attempts with a $2 black eyeliner pencil.
