It’s been a few years since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back as senior members of the royal family and moved to the U.S. to follow their own path, and they have definitely broken with tradition in a lot of ways now that there’s plenty of space (both geographic and otherwise) between the couple and the rest of the family. But from the looks of it, Markle may still be following royal protocol when it comes to nail polish.

It’s been widely reported that the ladies of the royal family are expected to always wear their nails relatively short and in soft, subtle, more natural-looking colors. The late Queen Elizabeth reportedly found bright and dark nail polish vulgar, which may be among the reasons Markle wore a sheer nearly white shade of pink for her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. A lot has changed within the royal family in the last five years, but Markle’s adhesion to its manicure rules apparently hasn’t.

Markle was seen with her husband cheering on competitors at the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf on Wednesday, September 13. She was looking gorgeous as usual, her long swept into a casual updo. And every time she clapped for the athletes, you could see that her manicure looked not unlike her wedding nails: short with a sheer coat of creamy, white polish.
