When the topic of highlights comes up, there are few celebrities who astral project into my mind faster than Jennifer Lopez. Golden blonde and caramel highlights have been J.Lo’s thing since the turn of the century, not to mention they’re countless people’s go-to hair-color update as spring rolls around. But as we kick off the month in which spring begins, Lopez is bucking the trend with a deeper, darker look.
On March 1, Lopez shared a gorgeous mirror selfie from stylist Lorenzo Martin‘s chair on Instagram. And while neither revealed many details about the content of the photo — Martin reposted the pic to his own grid — the message was clear: J.Lo has switched to a deeper, medium-brown shade than her usual color.
The new brunette hue has not so much as an inkling of honey tones, but rather cooler shades that blend stunningly with the superstar’s long layers.

This, of course, isn’t the first time Lopez has posted a mirror selfie that sent me spiraling into highlight conspiracy theories. Just 10 months ago, she shared a similar shot with an equally uninformative caption after a session with stylist Andrew Fitzsimons that looked like a similar departure from her usually golden-glossed look.
At least this time, she included the hashtag #THISISMENOW, which, yes, is how she’s been tagging most of her posts lately — a reference to the name of her next album. But in this case, it also feels like an understandably confident declaration of her new hair color.
