Models at the Versace Fall/Winter 2023 show in West Hollywood really took wing with bold black eyeliner that made them look like the most glamorous goths ever.

In true Versace fashion, the runway was littered with an all-star fleet of supermodels, including Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Emily Ratajkowski. Models wore their hair straight and parted in the middle, all the better to show off the deep black eyeliner painted by makeup artistry legend Pat McGrath and her team.

Models’ lids were painstakingly painted in a graphic black wing, starting at the inner corner of the eye and moving all the way out past the outer corner in an extreme wing shape. It added a sculptural and edgy vibe to the otherwise minimal makeup look of sculpted cheekbones and a terracotta lip. The eye is reminiscent of Julia Fox’s now-signature all-black “Fox eye” but streamlined and sleek.

“Creating this look was major! Making Donatella’s vision come to life through makeup was such an honor,” McGrath exclusively tells Allure. “It really was the feeling of Hollywood glamour with a punk black diamond-encrusted graphic eye. This is a celebration of beauty, sophistication, and the art of makeup.”

McGrath and her team used a combination Pat McGrath Labs’ PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in Xtreme Black and Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner in Xtreme Black to elongate the eyes into a wing. At first glance, the wings look to be solid matte black, but upon closer examination, they actually sparkle and shine. “To accessorize the look, I pulled out one of my favorites: Mothership III: Subversive Palette. Using shades Xtreme Black and Black Metal along with a custom mix of pearlized pigments and glitter, we transformed the eye into mesmerizing metallic majorness,” explained McGrath. “Because I always tell everyone to use without caution, we had to do the same for Versace by finishing the wing of the eye with custom black latex to complete this ultimate work of art.”
