The other day, I received an email with the subject line “Barbiecore is trending.” I rolled my eyes, not because I take issue with Barbiecore, but because that’s the farthest thing from news. Incorporating Barbie-inspired elements into your beauty look or outfit has been a bonafide thing for months now, with lots of celebrities having fun with the Barbiecore concept (like Barbie star Margot Robbie especially, of course). But if there was anyone I could picture giving a hard pass to participating in the trend, it’s Billie Eilish.
Boy, was I wrong.
Eilish was recently announced as one of the surprise artists on the Barbie movie soundtrack, and when she attended at the film’s premiere, she dabbled in Barbiecore in her own way with an oversized pink button-down shirt and hot-pink tie. But it’s apparent that she did far more than dabble when she recorded the video for the song she contributed to the soundtrack.
Eilish shared a teaser still from the “What Was I Made For?” video on social media today, revealing that she was given a full-blown ‘50s Barbie makeover. Although we see only a fraction of her profile, her hair gives away the signature look: a blonde-as-blonde-can-be, super high, super smooth ponytail that curls up at the ends, much like the bangs curl under. The look is straight off of the tiny little head of original 1959 Barbie.
“‘What Was I Made For?’ SONG AND VIDEO COMING THIS THURSDAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! i caaaaaaaan’t wait to see what you think???????? !! that shit hurted ????,” Eilish wrote in the Instagram caption. It’s unclear exactly what shit hurted — perhaps the wig? Maybe another look from the video we have yet to see? I hope it didn’t hurt too much, but I’m eager to see what she’s talking about.
