Kao USA Inc., a corporation that owns a number of well-known skin-care and hair-care brands, has announced a voluntary recall of Jergens Ulta Healing products — specifically certain lots of the 3-ounce and 10-ounce sizes of the popular drugstore moisturizer.

According to a statement released by Kao USA, some units of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer could show the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, “a bacterium which typically poses little medical risk to healthy people. However, people who have certain health problems such as weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infections.”

According to Florida-based board-certified dermatologist Jeffrey Fromowitz, MD, Pluralibacter gergoviae is an uncommon human pathogen that has been implicated as an opportunistic infection. Those most at risk are usually age extremes (young or old), those with immunosuppression, and those staying in hospitals for a prolonged period. “This bacterium has been implicated in recalls of cosmetic skin-care products in the past,” Dr. Fromowitz explains. “It is of particular concern because it displays resistance to parabens typically used in creams to minimize the risk of bacterial contaminants.”

Kao USA is asking consumers to check if they may be in possession of any 3-ounce of 10-ounce bottles that could be affected by checking for specific lot numbers. The affected lot codes for the 3-ounce size can be found on the back of the bottle in black ink and will read ZU712851, ZU712911, ZU712861, ZU722851, ZU712871, ZU722881, or ZU712881. The affected lot codes for the 10-ounce size are on the bottom of the bottle and read ZU722741, ZU732791, ZU722771, ZU732801, ZU722781, ZU732811, ZU732781, or ZU732821.

“Further investigation to determine the scope of the issue is still ongoing. However, Kao USA Inc. promptly took the precautionary step of issuing a voluntary recall of the affected product by removing the product in question from warehouses, working with retailers to ensure the product is removed from store shelves, and proactively notifying consumers,” the statement reads. At this time, other sizes, other lots, other Jergens products, and other products made by Kao USA brands are not impacted.

Kao USA is urging consumers to discontinue the use of the recalled lotion as a precautionary measure. Furthermore, it recommends that anyone with a bottle within the affected lot range call the Kao USA Consumer Care Center at 1-800-742-8798 or send an email to consumer@kao.com for a free product coupon. A postage-paid label and plastic bag will also be sent to consumers in order to return the affected product.
