New concept artwork sees Tom Hardy take over the role of Wolverine from Hugh Jackman in the MCU, putting him in the character’s classic comic book threads.

Marvel fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Wolverine and the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) saw the film rights to the X-Men characters come home to Marvel Studios. The team’s founder, Professor X, has already made an appearance, albeit in the form of an alternate universe’s version of the character. Patrick Stewart returned to play the part, but it is likely the MCU’s X-Men of Earth-616 will be played by a new cast. Tom Hardy is one of the names frequently mentioned as a potential replacement for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

One of the few complaints fans had concerning Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine was the fact that they never got to see the actor don the character’s classic comic book costume. This new concept art fixes that for Jackman’s potential MCU replacement, depicting Tom Hardy in Logan’s iconic yellow suit.

Tom Hardy has previously appeared in The Dark Knight Rises as Bane and, more recently, Sony’s Venom and its 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, so he is no stranger to the world of comic book movies. He certainly has the acting chops and the physicality to take on the role of Marvel’s fan favorite mutant. Check out how he could look in the role in this concept design, shared by artist “mizuriau” on Instagram:

Whether Tom Hardy would actually appear as Wolverine is up for debate, especially as his version of Eddie Brock has now featured in the MCU, during a post-credits scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Hugh Jackman has left some big shoes to fill, holding a special place in many Marvel fans’ hearts. Hardy is certainly one of the few actors who has what it takes to meet that challenge.
