A new concept design offers a look at an alternate imagining of Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder, drawing on the villain’s comic book look.
Thor: Love and Thunder will mark Chris Hemsworth’s fourth standalone outing as the God of Thunder, with Natalie Portman returning to portray Jane Foster’s incarnation of Thor, and Russell Crowe joining the lineup to play Zeus of the ancient Greek pantheon of gods. That all makes for plenty of gods, all of whom will need to watch their backs with Christian Bale joining the cast as Gorr the God Butcher, who’s out to bring about the extinction of the gods.
While earlier promotional art and set photos have offered a look at Gorr the God Butcher’s reimagined design for the film, with Christian Bale’s version of the villain adopting a more humanoid appearance in a white robe, a new concept design gives the villain a look that’s a little closer to his comic-book counterpart. In the comics, Gorr’s face was less human in design and almost skull-like, with sunken eyes, a high snake-like nose, and a wide thin mouth.
The concept design, shared on Instagram by artist “venomhology,” imagines a version of the villain that’s slightly closer to this for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to face off against. Check it out below:
The dark cloak incorporated in the design above is also a nod to the look of Gorr the God Butcher when he faced off against Thor in the comics. While Christian Bale will look a little different to this when he throws down with Chris Hemsworth’s and Natalie Portman’s versions of Thor in Love and Thunder, this is an interesting look at what might have been.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
