Robert Pattinson is reportedly stepping down from the role of the Caped Crusader following his appearance in The Batman, with Ben Affleck getting ready to don the cape and cowl once more.
The future of the so-called ‘SnyderVerse,’ DC’s film universe featuring Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman, has been in question ever since Zack Snyder released his cut of Justice League. With DC movies such as last month’s The Batman recasting and rebooting established characters, there had been some doubts over whether DC would ever return to the continuity that begain with 2013’s Man of Steel. However, recent reports seem to confirm DC are looking to revive Affleck’s take on Batman, as introduced in the highly regarded Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
It is understood that Robert Pattinson has paved the way for Ben Affleck’s return, choosing to step down as Bruce Wayne in the wake of the rigorous demands that came with shooting The Batman. The actor was reportedly reluctant to sign up to a multi-picture deal, due to the requirement to maintain a superhero physique and training regime over several years.
According to April Fool’s News, DC is now courting Ben Affleck for the next Batman picture, with the actor apparently eager to return. Alongside Affleck’s return, it is also being reported that Matt Damon is expected to appear in the role of Robin. Details are still scarce and it is not yet known whether any plot elements from Affleck’s original plans for The Batman – which would have seen his version of the Dark Knight fighting Deathstroke – will be incorporated.
Here is the synopsis for The Batman:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero and Bruce Wayne, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
