We’ve all seen Hellraiser, in all its gruesome glory. Forever controversial, the 1987 classic is stuffed to the gullet with heavy sadomasochism that still makes us squirm thirty-five-years later, for bloody and graphically obvious reasons. While some of you reading this are cringing at the images flashing through their memory banks, some feel a warmth, a desire (you may even be biting their lip right now) at the thought of the kinky fantasies brought to life. So, to all the kink-loving horror whores, this one is for you. Here are five kinky horror flicks you need to seek out.

Peeping Tom

First, let’s take it back to the horror scene of the 1960s, with a personal favorite, Peeping Tom. Released mere weeks before the Hitchcock classic, Psycho, Peeping Tom slipped through the cracks. Shot in full color and riveting, this murderous masterpiece elegantly portrays the dark urges of voyeurism through the eyes (er, lens) of cinematographer, Mark Lewis, ending with an unexpected twist. Although the storyline is solid and the depravity subtle, it received contemptuous reviews from critics. While both films center around the voyeuristic exploits of homicidal villains, Peeping Tom’s depictions of violence and lurid sexual content were considered especially scandalous for the era, and the film inevitably flopped. That fallout effectively ruined director Michael Powell’s previously renowned career, his undeniable genius shrouded by time.

Boxing Helena

Fast forward thirty-three-years, and 1993 brought us American body horror film, Boxing Helena. This film comes as another overlooked recommendation, from one kinky horror fan to another. Way ahead of its time, today it proves especially difficult to track down. This harshly underrated NC-17 flick was not well received outside of the Sundance Film Festival. After extensive cuts to achieve an R-rating, poor Helena unduly tanked at the box office. With sensual depictions of acrotomophilia, degradation, voyeurism, and some serious femdom vibes, this controversial mindf**k will pull you in with graphic, sexy scenes throughout and the sophisticated unraveling of an unexpected ending.

Der Bunker

Next up, German horror-comedy gold, Der Bunker. Through surrealism and an imaginative plot, this directorial debut toys with kink, confusion, and captivity. Nikias Chryssos brilliantly depicts Mommy/little and Disciplinarian undercurrents, as he takes us into an out of the way underground bunker. Referred to only as “Student”, our solitude-seeking protagonist finds himself tutoring his hosts’ unusual eight-year-old, Klaus, to repay a debt. Though he sought a quiet place to complete work, Student instead finds himself trapped by lunacy and perverse fascination. Apprehension builds from the first scene, teasing our discipline enthusiasts, this fetish filled flick combines alien possession, madness, and evocative power dynamics to explore the eerily realistic potential of Stockholm syndrome. The morose mood and looming isolation of the bunker create a sense of permanent forsakenness.

The Untamed

Coming through in fourth place, by chronology alone is Mexican horror-drama The Untamed. If you’re into bondage or tentacles, this kinky flick is enough to steam up your windows on a cool night. Opening with a glimpse of the possessive grip of a faceless alien creature fondling a physically drained—very much alive—and nearly nude Veronica. We go deep into a remote area of Mexico, where a meteor of some kind crash-landed—leaving a crater its wake. When the keepers decided that it was no longer safe for her to feed the creature, Veronica recruits unhappy Alejandra and her brother to experience the “purest sensation” said to “wipe out resentment or hate”. Packed with betrayal and debauchery, The Untamed is a must watch—especially on date night!

Death Drop Gorgeous

Last, but certainly not least is the 2021 cult horror trashterpiece Death Drop Gorgeous. This LBGTQ slasher defines morbid beauty, bringing together glory holes, drag queens, and pup play—with a twist, of course. At an hour and forty-five minutes, the run-time is a little longer than necessary, adding to the fabulousness of the drag show but may be a bit excessive for some viewers. This film’s storyline will ensure you never look at Grindr the same again. Oh, and fellas, beware of the meat grinder…
